Since 2 December 2004 the Greens have called for an incredible number
of inquiries.
According to Greens Watch's latest count, The Greens have called for an amazing 80 inquiries, consisting
of 69 Normal Inquiries and 11 Royal Commissions.
That's an average of 1.8 inquiries a month since 2/12/2004.
Many of the inquiries are justified and even admirable, however the sheer volume of attempted
inquiries indicates that the Greens have a very casual and blasé attitude towards calling for
them, and are likely using them purely as a political stunt to gain media attention.
Consider the cost to the taxpayer of an inquiry based upon the costs of other inquiries:
| Previous Inquiry | Cost |
| Aboriginal Deaths in Custody 1 | 30 Million |
Building and Construction Industry 2 | 60 Million |
| HIH Inquiry 2 | 29 Million |
| AWB Inquiry 3 | 40 Million |
Let's use the cheapest inquiry to get a rough idea of the cost of the Greens inquiries.
$29 million x 80 = 2.32 Billion Dollars.
Conclusion
After spending weeks compiling this inquiry list, Greens Watch concludes that the Greens
use of the inquiry system is irresponsible. $2.32 Billion in inquiries for political point scoring is inexcusable,
reprehensible and economic insanity.
Discussed in another article, but relevant, is the Greens misuse of the inquiry system to victimise political
enemies such as the CFMEU and religious groups.
GREENS INQUIRY LIST
Greens Watch considers it a duty to shine a light on these excessive calls for an inquiry and will be updating this list regularly
